KDH Beach Access

Notes:

• If you are using a beach cart you will want to go to a place that has access for that.  5th st, Raleigh st, Ocean Bay Blvd and a few others have this.  Alternatively carrying the cart up and down steps will also work at any location.

• There are stop lights at the main road are at Helga, First, Third, 5th st, Ocean Bay blvd (also Collington rd), Martin, Atlantic, and Eighth.

• Ocean Bay Blvd is the main lifeguard station at MP 8.  It has showers, bathrooms, and a nice boardwalk.   There is a convenience store across the street on beach road for drinks.

• 5th st parking has been the Target parking lot for many of us since Wright Shores requires a parking pass in the parking lot next to the Target parking lot.  Target has reaped the benefit of drink and snack sales.   They also have bathrooms.

• Coquina beach (not listed) is another very nice beach access point which is across the street from Bodie Island lighthouse.  showers, bathrooms, changing station, board walk, and life guards.   Its roughly 15-20 miles south of 4th st but worth a drive through the National park.  

• Ocracoke is a nice day trip.   The Ferry docks at the southern end of Hatteras, will sail out and around the Crab Sancuary at the mouth of Hatteras inlet, and will dock at the northern end of Ocracoke island.  I highly recommend checking the ferry schedule and getting there early.  Its about an hour ferry ride + the wait for the ferry.  Ocracoke is mostly a national park, but the small town at the southern end of the island is a great place to get lunch, visit the lighthouse or read up on  Blackbeard history.   The infamous Blackbeard the Pirate was killed at the southern end of the island in November of 1718.

• 4WD access is available at Corolla/Corova beach (north of the turn by 20 miles) and requires a parking pass from Currituck County.   https://currituckcountync.gov/beach-parking/
